About smart images

For activity-level work instructions where a single part or assembly requires multiple images (for example, different part views such as Top, Side, Bottom, and so on), FactoryLogix can display the desired part image dynamically based on an image title. This capability alleviates the need to create work instructions driven by option codes which can be time consuming. Using these smart images may also reduce project size, relieving the need to have a huge set of instructions available when only a fraction of the content is used for any given batch/order.

The FactoryLogix Part Library allows multiple images to be recorded against a single part definition. Each picture for a part definition is assigned a title selected from a list of user-defined image titles. Each part definition has one image per picture title. These dynamic work instructions benefit both production and material receiving processes (for example, when displaying related part images against a received item in cases where a common receiving process is used).

The ability to dynamically display many images for a given part in an activity-level work instruction has several benefits:

  • Automates the presentation of work instruction content.

  • Reduces work instruction development overhead.

  • Reduces overall project size.

For example, suppose you manufacture printed circuit boards in different configurations. You can put all the images for different views of your PCBs in a smart image gallery in the FactoryLogix Part Library. When process designers create work instructions for shop floor operators, they can select any PCB image from the list of saved images and titles—without uploading images each time work instructions need to be modified for a particular customer order.

Important

The ability to dynamically display multiple images for a given part cannot be utilized in FactoryLogix when the parts list is imported using the Batch Import integration service (FLX-XTD-JOB-01).

Create and manage smart images

You create and manage dynamic images for work instructions in the FactoryLogix Part Library.

  1. Log into the NPI client application.

  2. Select Libraries > Part Library.

  3. On the Internal Part Numbers tab, select the part or assembly you want to create a smart image gallery for.

  4. Hover over the Thumbnail Image field on the right side of the window, then select the Manage Images UNKNOWN ATTACHMENT button (the gear).

If images already exist for the selected part or assembly, they will display in the Smart Image Gallery window.

  5. In the upper-left corner of the Smart Image Gallery window, select the Add Add buttonbutton.

  6. In the dialog that displays, locate and select an image file you want to upload for this part, then select Open.

The image is imported to the gallery; any existing images in the gallery are also displayed.

  7. To assign a title to the selected image, select the Manage Titles Manage Titles button button (the Black gear) in the upper-right corner of the Smart Image Gallery window to display the Smart Image Title Manager window where you can assign a title to the new image.

Note

Optionally, you can use the drop-down above the image you imported to select an available title from the list (available titles no longer have images associated to them and can be reused).

  1. In the Smart Image Title Manager window, select the Add Add button button in the upper-left corner of the window, enter the desired title for the image you imported, then select OK.

Add New Smart Image Title dialog

The title you entered is added to the bottom of the list.

  2. (Optional) You can reorder the list of titles at any time by dragging them to new positions.

  3. (Optional) To make any image in the list the default Thumbnail image in the Part Library, drag the title to the top of the title list in the Smart Image Title Manager window.

  4. Select the Edit or Delete buttons to edit or delete a selected title in the list.

If you delete a selected image title that is in use, you will see this message if the title is being used by an image in the Part Library:

    Delete Smart Image Title message

  5. When you're finished arranging and/or editing image titles, select OK to return to the Smart Image Gallery window. (Select OK again to return to the Part Library window.)
