Create a NiceLabel barcode label template

This topic provides basic instructions to create a NiceLabel barcode label template for use with the FactoryLogix system. For complete information about installing and using NiceLabel, see the NiceLabel website.

Note

Be sure to read about NiceLabel DEMO mode limitations here: https://www.nicelabel.com/support/knowledge-base/article/limitations-of-the-demo-mode

  1. Start NiceLabel Designer, then select New label.

    New Label dialog

  2. Select the printer and printer options you will use with this label template, then select Next.

New Label Setup Wizard Select the Printer

  3. Make your selections for Paper, Page Size, and Paper, then select Next to display a blank template page.

Note

To set up a label quickly using default settings, select New Label, select printer settings, then select Finish.

  1.  Select the label layout, then select Next.

  2. Select the barcode dimensions, select Next, then select Finish.

  3. Drag the Barcode icon from the left panel tool bar onto the page, then resize it if necessary. The Design and Barcode menus are now visible at the top of the window.

  4.  Click the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the barcode image in the NiceLabel main window.

  5. On the Source tab, select Variable from the Connected data source drop-down, select Add new variable, enter Box Serial in the Variable name field, then select Create variable. This name will be easy to identify later for FactoryLogix field mappings.

  6. Select Text from the Data type drop-down, select All from the Allowed characters drop-down, then select Next.

  7. If the data that will be populated is longer than 10 characters, select more next to the Allowed characters drop-down.

  8. Select Limit length, specify the desired character length, then select OK.

  9. Select the Output rules tab and enter or select the appropriate information in the Prefix and Suffix fields, then select OK. (If your label doesn't require a prefix or suffix, just select OK.)

Specify another variable

Another variable is required to add a text object to the label template that will be responsible for populating a different data field from FactoryLogix. Once the additional variable is added, you will assign it to the new barcode object you added in the label template.

Note

Each variable linked to an object must be defined as Keyboard Input.

  1. In the NiceLabel main window, select Add new variable, enter a name for the new variable, then select Create variable.

  2. Double-click the new variable in the tree, then select Prompt at print time and Remember the last-used value (dynamic value) on the General tab.

  3. On the Input rules tab, select Limit length and increase the Length to a value that will accommodate the data returned from FactoryLogix.

  4. Specify any additional settings you want for this label on the General, Input Rules, and Output Rules tabs, then select OK to return to the main window.

  5. Here is an example of how multiple basic variables for this label will display after the basic label setup is complete:

  6. Select File > Save As, enter a name for your label template, then select Save to save it as a *.nIbl file.

  1. See the topic Example: Set up a packout label template in NPI and follow the instructions to add a NiceLabel label template to the FactoryLogix system.
